Table Mountain Hike: June 2009

7 Scouts and 2 adults hiked up Table Mountain to the Scout Mountain Club Hut. A wintery cold front was looming, however, spirits were not dampen by that. From Constantia Nek, we hiked up to the Eagle’s Nest (where photo was taken). The view of the Southern Suburbs and Hout Bay were still beautiful despite the haziness in the air. As soon as we got onto the higher slopes, the wind was strong front the front.

We could see a massive bank of pure white cloud heading straight for us in slow motion. The weather reports have said that rainfall would be around nightfall (+-6pm). For once they were right and we arrived safely at the Hut, just in time.

Quick hot suppers were prepared and eaten, before playing cards and drinking hot chocolate. As most of us were tired, the ZZZZZZ phase kicked in earlier than expected and it wasn’t long before the first snoring was heard!!

At day break, breakfasts of all sorts emerged from the backpacks and cleaning of the Hut commenced. Then we had to brave the icy mist as we proceed across the dam and past the locked Waterworks Museum. Soon we arrive at the top of Nursery Ravine for the decent down to Kirstenbosch. We arrive a little before scheduled ETA and waited for parents to arrive to lift us back to Durbanville.

In closing, this was a “short ‘n sweet” overnight hike and despite the looming cold front, all enjoyed the adventure. The lesson learnt, was that, we often limit ourselves based on someone else’s warning, when in fact, if we make the right judgment call based on our sixth sense, all turns out well. And in fact, Better, and that’s when TRUE ADVENTURE starts!

Is this not what BP wants of us, as Scouts?
