Cubbing rocks universal!

This year we are celebrating 100 years of Cubbing worldwide. In South Africa we are celebrating through Group, District, Regional and National events. But, if we really want to know why Cubbing Rocks, who better to ask than the Cubs themselves….

We spoke to Maxime Guyot (10) from 1st Bryanston Cub Pack in Gauteng.

action photoSSA: Why is Cubbing so much fun?
Cubbing is so much fun because I learn a lot of things for example how to help other people. I also see myself growing up and being aware of safety at home and outdoors.

SSA: What was your best experience with Cubs?
My best experience with Cubs was the District B.P. Gala and the challenge at Kontiki was also a nice memory.

SSA: What is the weirdest thing you ate outdoors?
I ate some caterpillars and grass hoppers at the one camp.

SSA: What was the toughest challenge at Cubs?
The toughest challenge at Cubs was The Wally Kohler Enduro Cycle Rally at Delta Park! I have a nice picture of me crossing a puddle of mud.

SSA: What was the most amazing place you visited with Cubs?
The most amazing place I visited with Cubs was during a family camp at Vaaldam, near Deneysville. We did a catamaran boat tour and we swam in the lake.

SSA: Can you name a few things you have learnt by being a Cub?
I learned how to recycle objects, how to make knots and also safety rules at home.

SSA: What things have you done with Cubs to help people in your community?
I cleaned up litter around the river near the Cub Den as part of the Bryanston Community Forum Spruit Day initiative. I also gave all my small clothes and toys to other kids in need.

SSA: What did you teach your mum that you learned at Cubs?
I taught my mum how to gain my badges. This reminded her of lots of things when she was a Cub in France.

SSA: What makes a good Akela?
A good Akela must be someone who respects the others, who gives good advice, who helps people and who organizes a lot of fun activities!

SSA: Why is your Akela special?
My Akela is special because he is very nice, fair, calm and also strict when needed.

Cubbing Rocks because … it helped me growing up in a good way and it also improved my English. What I discovered there was a new world, full of fun every time and I met nice friends. In 2013 I came to South Africa because of my dad’s job. Then, as my mother was a Cub when she was young, she put me in a Cub Pack. Today, we are going to move to Thailand and I will forever keep those Cub meetings in my mind. I am confident to find another Pack in Asia as Cubbing rocks universal!
