Scouting teaches skills for the changing world

Message from Jonathan Pienaar, National Young Leader’s Representative.
Each year on the 16th of June, we remember the importance of equal education, and listening to young people. Youth day also highlights the importance of youth inclusion and youth involvement at decision making levels to ensure the voices of the youth are heard. This year’s theme, “Skills for Life” – Focusses on empowering the youth to be the impactful leaders of tomorrow. This theme resonates deeply with us all at SCOUTS South Africa.

In a world marked by high unemployment, rapid technological change, and environmental challenges, , young people must be equipped not only with academic knowledge, but also with practical, adaptable life skills. This is where Scouting plays a transformative role. Through our programmes, young people develop leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, communication, resilience, and “green”—skills that are increasingly vital for success in any economic context.

I’ve seen first-hand how Scouting nurtures these competencies in youth from all backgrounds. Our programmes empower young Scouts to become confident agents of change in their communities. They are mentored to grow holistically, combining values-based education with environment conservation, and service-driven action. This model not only prepares them to lead in the workplace but also to shape a more inclusive, sustainable South Africa.

To mark Youth Day, SCOUTS South Africa- in collaboration with World Scouting’s Africa Region –hosted a dual training where over 30 young people were trained in the design thinking methodology within the global Life Leaders Initiative so they can address local challenges and provide sustainable solutions. Another 30 young people were trained in environmental advocacy, in order for them to return to their communities and engage with local stakeholders to effect changes that will enhance sustainable conservation.

So, let’s celebrate the potential of our youth, and provide platforms where young people can learn, lead, thrive, and leave a lasting impact. To every young person in Scouting, your voice matters, your dreams are valid, and your skills have the power to build a better tomorrow. #readyforlife
