Greater Eldorado Park Scouts clean up community

The township of Alexandra in Johannesburg is a thriving community, however they still face challenges, including illegal dumping. “The illegal dumping is both an environmental and health hazard. As Scouts we felt obligated to assist local community partners with their clean-up initiative”, explains DSD Scouter Mandla Khumalo.

“So, as the 1st and 2nd DSD Greater Eldorado Park Scouts, we joined the Mandela Day action organised by the Guardian Angel Wildlife and Marine Trust (GAWMT). Together, we took this ‘clean-up’ to the streets of Alex – alongside other Scouts and members of local organisations. As a collective, we walked the streets and picked up the litter until we arrived at our local park which is located next to a river. There, we also saw the necessity of a clean environment and helped to clean up the park”, he continues.

“We learnt that littering and dumping is a big problem to our environment and that we should help keep clean at all times “, says Scout Danika Knight. Fellow Scout Khloe agrees. “Many hands can make a difference“. Leo-Angelo one of their youngest Scouting members is keen to roll out the Plastic Tide Turners project even further and stated: “We should clean up like this in Eldos too!”
