SCOUTS South Africa has a big variety of Awards that can be given to volunteers as a sign of gratitude and respect for the hard work they put in to empowering the youth and communities we serve.
There are various requirements per Award that need to be met to qualify. They are reviewed Regionally and Nationally by our volunteer Award Committees.
Regional Award Committees
Ideally, each Scout Region should have a Regional Awards Committee (RAC) that reviews all nominations for Merit Awards, National Citations, Meritorious Conduct and Gallantry Awards. They then make their recommendations and send the nominations and applications to the National Awards Committee (NAC) through the Regional Commissioner.
Here are our current Regional Awards Committee Chairs:
- Western Cape: Peter Meyer
- Gauteng: Jill Dickinson
- KZN: Guy Cawes
National Award Committee
The National Awards Committee receives all nominations and applications. After reviewing them, and considering the Regional Awards Committee’s recommendations, they further recommend the type and the grade of the Award. Their main role is to ensure that the standard and the criteria for each Award is kept the same for every applicant, and therefore making sure our Adult Awards processes are fair and transparent.
Members of the National Awards Committee include:
- Nigel Forshaw (Chair)
- Steve Thorn
- Andrew Campbell
- Tebogo Moletsane
- Mzamo Ncube
It is with great thanks to the above Committees – who oversee the Awards process – that we have so many Awards handed out each year to members. Their hard work and dedication to ensure that all the relevant information is sourced and gathered truly makes the difference for every application received.
As a reminder to all our members, when submitting an Award nomination, gather as much detailed information as possible from multiple people who know the nominee well. It will help to ensure a fair and accurate outcome.
