2nd Africa Scout Moot Travel Notice

MootThere have been certain concerns raised by some Scouting members over travel to South Africa for the 2nd Africa Scout Moot due to the recent xenophobic violence in certain parts of South Africa.

SCOUTS South Africa’s leadership and 2nd Africa Scout Moot team are aware of and saddened by the recent isolated incidents of xenophobia in parts of the country. We strongly condemn all forms of xenophobic violence, discrimination, and intolerance. These actions go against the values of Scouting and the principles of respect, inclusion, and human dignity that we uphold.

SCOUTS South Africa remains committed to creating safe, inclusive spaces for all young people and volunteers, regardless of nationality or background.

As Scouts, we are guided by the Scout Promise and Law, and these values must always shape how we interact with one another. Scouts are Messengers of Peace, and this is especially important when communities are under pressure.

For the 2nd Africa Scout Moot in August, participants will be visiting South Africa for a short-term, structured international Scouting programme hosted at Arrowe Park in Benoni, an official SCOUTS SA venue. The site is secure, with controlled access and appropriate safety measures, including perimeter fencing and access control systems.

All transport during the Moot will be provided through vetted and trusted private transport partners to ensure a safe and smooth programme. In the case of independent travel to Arrowe Park, participants are encouraged to reach out to the Moot team for a list of vetted travel companies.

Please can the Head of Contingents confirm their arrival time at the transport hub with the Moot team (forms to be provided). This will allow for SCOUTS South Africa teams to be there to meet you apon your arrival. SCOUTS South Africa members will be at the incoming transport hubs (such as Park Station or OR Tambo International Airport) in order to make sure that you are directed to the correct spaces. Our SCOUTS South Africa members will be identified by their uniforms and scarves.

Please travel in your Scout uniform and scarf as this will help you to be identified as a member of the Scout Movement and as a participant attending the 2nd Africa Scout Moot.

The Moot’s purpose is about reflecting the core values of Scouting and will be a space where young people from across Africa and beyond can connect, learn from one another, and build friendships based on mutual respect and shared Scouting values. We warmly welcome all our African brothers and sisters to this event and look forward to hosting them in a spirit of unity, friendship, and shared purpose.

As Messengers of Peace, we must not feed the notion of hate. We must not stay away in times of strife and disharmony but instead show the rest of the world that we stand together as Scouts. We must walk the talk and demonstrate that our values are consistent, especially in moments like these.

“Scouting is a Movement that brings young people together across borders, cultures, and backgrounds. In times like these, our values matter even more. We must choose understanding, respect, and unity in everything we do. SCOUTS South Africa remains committed to using Scouting as a force for peace, connection, and positive change, and we look forward to welcoming our Scouting brothers and sisters to the 2nd Africa Scout Moot in August,” SCOUTS South Africa Chief Scout, Mr. Khonzaphi Mdaka.
