Cutty Sark Meerkats and Cubs
Riding a bicycle is fun and healthy and gives children and youth the opportunity to develop skills, confidence, independence and embrace a sense of freedom. #WorldBicycleDay.
In Scouting, that journey can begin from an early age. Meerkats can develop confidence using wheeled equipment through the My Wheels Interest badge, before progressing to the Cub Cycling Interest badge, where they learn bicycle safety, maintenance, road rules, and riding skills. As Scouts, they can take their knowledge even further through the Cyclist Interest badge, developing advanced cycling, maintenance, route-planning, cycling etiquette, and teamwork through group rides and cycling events.

Cutty Sark Scout Group
Learning to ride a bicycle is a skill that many people carry with them for life. In much the same way, the values and life skills developed through Scouting remain with young people long after they leave the Scout Movement. By learning Scout values, ethical leadership, responsibility, teamwork and service at a young age, Scouts are building confidence and character that will support them throughout their lives.
This World Bicycle Day, we celebrate every Meerkat trying something new, every Cub learning a new skill, every Scout taking on a new challenge, and every young person discovering that the lessons learned today can last a lifetime.
While a bicycle can take you many kilometres, the skills and values gained through Scouting will take you through life.
* The cycling badges contribute to the Scouts4SDGs initiative by supporting good health SDG3, sustainable communities SDG11 and climate action SDG13.
