The freedom of Scout adventures

When Sipho Nonjola joined 1st Iteko Scout Group in 2019, he did not expect the lifechanging journey he was embarking on. “I joined the Scout Movement because I could see that the kids in Scouting behaved differently. They were obedient, they liked other people and then would help them when in need.

I stayed in SCOUTS South Africa all this time because Scouting is a Movement that build boys’ and girls’ characters. It teaches you the buddy system you learn pioneering, map work etc. You make friends easily and enjoy adventures like sleeping in a tent. I’ve had many fun opportunities! I’ve been able to travel a lot with other Scouts and Scouters without my parents, sleeping away from home and from comfortable beds, on camp we sleep on the floor in our tents, and I enjoy it! I think this is why I’m still in Scouting”, Sipho says with a laugh.

In-between the adventure and the fun with his friends, Sipho is proud of what he has achieved in Scouting. “I have achieved lots of theme badges and interest badges like First Aid, cooking and camping.”

When I asked him if he would encourage young people to join SCOUTS South Africa, he said: “Definitely! I will encourage most young boys to join Scouting in order for them to grow properly and treat others with respect and bravery. Most of the time Scouts gain experience in many ways, hiking, sailing, etc.”
