Recognition empowers volunteers who serve

Every August, we celebrate the remarkable women who shape our families, communities and our nation. This year’s Women’s Month theme, “Empowered Women Empower the Nation”, reminds us that empowerment is not simply about giving opportunities, it is also about ensuring that people feel seen, valued and appreciated for the difference they make.

Across SCOUTS South Africa, thousands of volunteers generously give their time, skills and hearts to helping young people grow into responsible, capable and caring citizens. Among them are extraordinary women who lead with compassion, courage and resilience. They mentor, teach, organise, encourage and inspire. Often behind the scenes and without expecting recognition.

Yet, recognition matters. Research consistently shows that volunteers who feel appreciated are more motivated, more engaged and more likely to continue serving. A simple thank you, a heartfelt conversation, a nomination for an award or public acknowledgement of a person’s contribution tells them, “What you do matters. You matter.”

Recognition is not about medals or certificates alone. It is about creating a culture where every volunteer knows that their contribution is valued. When volunteers feel appreciated, they are inspired to give their best, to mentor others and to continue investing in the lives of young people.

This is especially true for the women who serve within our Movement. Many of our female volunteers balance careers, families, personal responsibilities and community commitments while still making time to create life-changing experiences for children and young people. Their leadership often extends far beyond Scout meetings. They become role models, trusted mentors and positive influences whose impact can last a lifetime. When we recognise and celebrate these women, we do more than honour individual achievements, we strengthen the entire Scout Movement. We encourage other women to step forward into leadership, inspire young girls to believe in their own potential and demonstrate that service is valued and respected.

The ripple effect is profound. An empowered volunteer creates confident young people. Confident young people become compassionate leaders. Compassionate leaders build stronger communities. Strong communities build a stronger nation. Recognition is therefore not merely a reward for past service, it is an investment in our future.

As we celebrate Women’s Month, let us take the time to thank the women who quietly make a difference every day. Let us celebrate their achievements, acknowledge their sacrifices and recognise the invaluable contribution they make to developing South Africa’s next generation of leaders. Empowered women truly do empower the nation.

And when we recognise, appreciate and encourage those who serve, we empower them to continue changing lives, one young person, one Scout Group and one community at a time. Let us remember to put in those Award Nominations as soon as we think of someone worthy. Let us not delay the task or think someone else will do it. You are the someone who can change a volunteer’s life!
