Recently, 14 Scouts and 3 adult leaders from 1st Hermanus Sea Scouts got together to support each other and the homeless within their community. In just 67 minutes the Scouts made 220 servings of soup for the residents of the night shelter in Hermanus.
“In the Western Cape we have cold rainy winters. A soup drive often alleviates hunger, gives warmth and hope. We decided to donate the soup to the Hermanus Night shelter in support of Tanique’s community service project which includes a food and toiletry drive”, explains 1st Hermanus Sea Scouts TS Orsella Schneeberger .
“The project was driven by the Patrol Leaders who asked their Patrol members to donate specified soup ingredients and bring cooking utensils and pots. In anticipation of the annual Mandela Day 67 min of service campaign, the Scouts had 67 minutes to prepare, cook and package the soup. Additional time was allocated for clean-up and delivery of the 220 servings of soup to the night shelter. The soup was frozen so the night shelter can serve it to their inhabitants over a period of time. Through this initiative we learned that a little goes a long way if we all give what we have and do what we can.”
