Algoa Sea Scout Aarin Storm Anthony wanted to give back to his community and so he identified a local children’s home in one of Gqeberha’s underserved communities. The children living there have very limited access to books, toys, basic furniture, or structured play opportunities. “I saw a deep need not just for material goods but also for care, connection, and a sense of inclusion. I wanted to use my Scouting skills to bring joy, learning, and dignity to children who often feel forgotten” explains Storm.
“I began planning the project in January 2025, raising funds through food sales, speaking at Scout meetings to gain support, and reaching out to family, friends, and community members for donations. I used the money raised to buy new and second-hand items including books, puzzles, furniture, stationery, toys, and sports gear. On Youth Day (16 June 2025), with the help of some of my Patrol members, we delivered the donations and hosted a full Scouting Experience Programme at the children’s home. We ran games, taught simple skills, sang songs, and shared snacks with the children – many of whom had never participated in anything like this before”, he adds.
When we asked a caregiver at the home about this initiative, the answer was touching. “Storm brought more than just donations. He brought joy, energy, and made each child feel special. The programme was so thoughtfully done.”
Implementing community service projects as Scouts #messengersofpeace not only helps our communities, but also teaches our Scouts about the importance of caring for others. “What I learned through this project is that caring about others isn’t just something you say it’s something you do. Planning everything and spending time with the kids made me realise how much some people don’t have. It really opened my eyes and made me more thankful for the things I have. I also saw how good it feels to help others. It’s not just about giving stuff, it’s about showing people that they matter. This whole experience made me want to do even more for my community. Being a Scout gives me the chance to make a difference.”
