Recently Mariechen Boshoff, RTC Adult Support for Eastern Cape South Region obtained her Woodbadge. Many know Marienchen as a driving force behind the 1st Algoa Sea Scout Group. Her dedication and passion for seeing children thrive is apparent the moment you meet her.
“My Scouting journey began when I wanted my children to experience the outdoors, away from technology, and learn new skills. At a local fair, I saw Scouts building a pioneering project. I saw what Scouts could do and how they grow, and I wanted that for my children,” she says.
“The very next week, my son and daughter joined the Cub Pack. At first, I would wait outside during meetings. Slowly, the Pack Scouter drew me in to help with games and activities. When that Scouter moved overseas, I joined as Pack Scouter and then later as the Scout Group Leader (SGL) of Algoa Sea Scouts. I joined during a challenging time for the Scout Group. Numbers were low, and then COVID-19 hit. I was determined to keep the Group alive, when it could have easily closed”, she says humbly. “Even when things looked bleak, she never gave up. Her tenacity carried Algoa Sea Scouts through those rough years, and under her leadership the Group has gone from strength to strength,” adds a fellow Scouter.
“My favourite activity is the twice-yearly “Cubs’ Club school holiday programme”, where Cubs earn badges and make memories. Last April, the Cubs tackled the Geologist badge, Citizen badge and had so much fun. It’s all about giving children skills they can carry for life. I also really enjoy travelling for Scout training,” she says.
Today, Mariechen also serves as RTC Adult Support for the Eastern Cape South Region, always ready to guide and encourage others. “My future dream in Scouting is opening a campsite called “Gilbosh, it will be a place for Scouts in the Region to learn. I hope we can officially open it in celebration of Algoa Sea Scouts’ 100-year anniversary in 2029.”
To Marienchen, Women’s Month is about honouring women who give their time, energy, and resources to serve others. Her journey in Scouts can be summed up in one word: Tenacity.
