Earlier this year, the Durban Rovers of Sigma Rover Crew came together for a meaningful community service initiative at CROW, the Centre for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife in Yellowwood Park, KZN.
“Inspired by the 6th Scout Law, “A Scout is a friend to animals”, our Crew unanimously agreed to support wildlife conservation. As Rovers, we recognise the damaging impact human activity has had on the natural world, and we felt compelled to take action.
We reached out to CROW, and were tasked with the job of kickstarting the renovation of the tortoise enclosure. Our mission was to remove the grass and prepare a dry, barren habitat, an environment best suited for tortoises. This hands on activity not only helped the animals but also strengthened the bond within our Crew.
After our work, we were given a tour of the rehabilitation center, where we encountered storks, mongooses, and vervet monkeys. We learned about one of CROW’s philosophies that animals should not spend their lives in captivity. Their mission is to rehabilitate wildlife so that each animal can heal, grow, and, when ready, return to the wild.
The day was more than just a fun crew activity, it was a powerful reminder of our responsibility to care for and learn about the creatures we share this planet with. “
