In the coming weeks we will be reflecting on the difference Scouting makes in the lives of our members and communities. Today we are talking to Sinethemba Mavuso, best known as ‘Boke’ in Mpumalanga Scouting circles, Boke is a Rover with the 1st Barberton Scout Group. Before becoming the man he is today, he was a boy plagued by trouble and struggles. Here is his story in which he shares how the Scout Adventure transformed his life.
“Growing up in a challenging environment, I found myself drifting toward negative influences, including substance abuse. My behavior often landed me in trouble not only with the community but also with school officials, and I felt lost and hopeless.
Everything changed the day my teacher, who is also a Troop Scouter, noticed my potential and took me under her wing, mentoring me and encouraging positive choices. She initially enrolled me in a school Scouting Group. I was hesitant and skeptical, but the values of Scouting slowly began to resonate with me.
I still make mistakes; however, the discipline of Scouting activities, earning badges, and leadership exercises helped me build confidence and resilience. I was introduced to healthier outlets for my energy and emotions and learned the importance of responsibility and selfcontrol.
When not in Scouting, Boke is now a young entrepreneur, owning ‘Lekker Kos Cafeteria’. “I am grateful for the
support that I receive from Scouting and my community, despite my past mistakes. Today, I speak openly about my past struggles and credit Scouting for helping me turn my life around. I advocate for Scouting and for healthy communities that can help young people find direction, support, and skills to grow, change, and succeed.”
