Adult Leader recognition starts when someone sees what they do

By Daniel Le Jeune, WC Warrant Course 2026

Scouting runs on volunteers. Behind every weekend camp, hike, badge, activity and opportunity for young people, there is a dedicated Adult volunteer who has given their time, skills and energy to make it happen. Often, they do it quietly.

They are the people who arrive early, stay late, plan programmes after work, mentor young people, support fellow volunteers and step forward whenever something needs to be done. Their contribution matters.

That is why SCOUTS South Africa has a Recognition and Awards programme to say thank you and recognise those who have gone the extra mile. Recognition is about more than a certificate, badge or medal. It is about telling someone: “We see your contribution. We value your service. Thank you.” This is why Adult Awards matter.

However, many incredible Adult volunteers never receive an award simply because nobody nominates them. As we launch our “Recognise the difference & celebrate your Adult Leader” campaign, we have a challenge for you.

Think of one person in your Group, District or Region who has made a difference. Someone who has gone the extra mile. Someone whose contribution deserves to be celebrated. Then take a look at SCOUTS South Africa’s Recognition and Awards programme and consider nominating them.

Because recognition starts with someone taking the time to notice. Who will you recognise? Explore the SCOUTS South Africa Recognition and Awards HERE.
