Meerkats dive into learning through water safety

Learning was anything but ordinary at the recent Eastern Cape South Meerkat Mob Day, where our youngest members explored the 2026 National Challenge theme of Water Safety through a day packed with fun, creativity and adventure.

The children – aged 5 to 6 years old – rotated through a variety of exciting activities designed to build important life skills in an age-appropriate way. They learned basic first aid, discovered how to recognise swimming pool safety signs, enjoyed supervised water play and games, and explored simple water safety messages that could one day help keep themselves and others safe.

Creativity also flowed throughout the day as each Meerkat painted their own reusable cotton shopping bag and took part in a range of arts and crafts activities. Alongside all the learning, there was plenty of time to laugh, make new friends and enjoy being part of the wider Scouting family.

A highlight of the day was seeing several Meerkats receive their Gold Star from Regional Commissioner Neil O’Brien. As the highest award in the Meerkat programme, the Gold Star celebrates the dedication, achievements and growth of our youngest Scouts as they complete this important stage of their Scouting journey.

By bringing the National Challenge to life through hands-on activities, adult leaders in the Eastern Cape South created an unforgettable day that inspired curiosity, built practical skills and showed that some of life’s most important lessons are learned through play.

A big thank you to the volunteers and supporters whose enthusiasm and dedication made the day such a memorable adventure for every Meerkat.
