One of the values we learn through Scouting is compassion. By learning to recognise when others need support, Scouting members learn to identify local challenges, conceptualise solutions, and plan actions to help.
This Mandela Day, one of the ways Scouts can put compassion into action is through our Jars of Hope initiative.

Across South Africa, many families continue to face challenges in putting food on the table, particularly during the cold winter months. A simple jar filled with carefully selected nutritious soup ingredients can provide warmth, nourishment and encouragement to those who need it most.
We are encouraging Scout Groups to make at least 17 Jars of Hope or provide ingredients for at least 67 warm meals as part of their Mandela Day service projects.
Each Jar of Hope can provide a hearty meal for up to four people and serves as a practical example of young people making a positive difference in their communities.

Creating Jars of Hope is also a great activity for youth members to lead. From collecting ingredients and recycling containers to assembling the jars and identifying local organisations or families to support, Scouts can take ownership of the entire project.
The impact of a Jar of Hope goes beyond the meal itself. It sends a message that someone cares. Together, we can turn compassion into action and bring warmth, hope and kindness to our communities this winter.
