When 20 Scouting children, adult leaders and parents of the 1st Sunridge Scout Group gathered at Kings Beach in Gqeberha on a crisp Saturday morning, they weren’t just collecting litter. They were demonstrating that caring for the environment starts with simple actions and that young people have the power to make a real difference.
Blessed with beautiful weather and one of South Africa’s most spectacular coastlines, the Group spent the morning removing litter from the beach, leaving it cleaner for both people and wildlife. “By participating in a community beach clean-up, our Meerkats and Cubs demonstrated their Scout values of service, environmental care, and active citizenship. Together, we collected multiple bags of litter. The enthusiasm shown by the young Meerkats and Cubs was particularly inspiring, reminding everyone that even the smallest hands can make a meaningful difference,” says Pack Scouter Jessica Gibson.
For 1st Sunridge Scout Group, community service is more than a once-off event. It is woven into the programme, giving young people regular opportunities to develop empathy, responsibility and leadership while serving others.
1st Sunridge Scout Group has proudly participatded in several community service initiatives throughout 2026. “Earlier this year, we collected towels for the local SANCCOB rehabilitation centre, supporting the care of rescued seabirds. We are currently running a book collection in support of the Shine Literacy Centre. For the second consecutive year, our Group will also participate in the Winter Woolly Drive, continuing its commitment to supporting those in need during the colder months.”
In addition to serving the community, 1st Sunridge provides multiple opportunities for young people to grow through fun, adventure, and learning. This year, the Group hosted the District Cub and Scout “Skillkana”, where Cubs and Scouts demonstrated and developed Scouting skills. “These experiences reflect the heart of Scouting, which is a Movement that nurtures confident, capable, and caring young people. Every activity, whether a hike, camp, community project, or environmental initiative, helps shape future leaders.”
Through service, adventure, and lifelong friendships, Scouting continues to prove that small acts of kindness can create lasting change.
